The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has been organising the Rohinton Baria Cricket Trophy, the Inter University Hockey Tournament and other events for promotion of sports in the Universities throughout the country. In order to give encouragement to the talented sportsmen of the University system and promote sports in Universities an idea was mooted to organise National Level tournaments of Cricket and Hockey.
It has been decided to organise every year, a National Level University Cricket League (UCL) and University Hockey League (UHL). For the purpose an Organising Committee chaired by the Minister of Human Resource Development, Communication and IT has been constituted, composed of senior representatives of University Grants Commission (UGC), AIU, NDTV, Vice Chancellors of several Universities, NDMC, DDCA Hockey India and eminent persons in the field of sports.
The University Cricket League would be played among 8 top University teams in the T 20 format, from amongst those who qualify through a zonal competition. Similarly the University Hockey League would be played among the top 8 teams selected through the zonal competitions. Both the Leagues would, in the first year, be played around January-February 2013. The AIU which has a long history of organising sports events will be the main organiser of the two Leagues. The NDTV would bear all expenses and marketing related to the events with the aim of supporting university sports.
The Organising Committee, AIU and NDTV entered into an agreement to crystallize the collaborative effort of organising the UCL and UHL in a professional manner, a big step forward in providing avenues and opportunity to a talented bunch of young University players for transforming Indian Cricket and Hockey through professional event management and scientific approach. On successful organisation of the League in Cricket and Hockey, the concept may be extended by AIU to other sporting events in the University system.
